Notes: An old post that wasn't following any particular Whumptober prompt list, just wanted an excuse to polish off this draft and share it! Thankfully this isn’t how things go in Rem’s canon storyline, but I couldn’t help but wonder!
Summary: Rem had his entire future planned out down to the minute, but even the best laid plans don’t come to fruition.
The first time Rem saw Jade cry was when they were both thirteen.
Yet another cruel child was picking on Rem about his family’s deaths, pissing him off and turning the knife that was survivor’s guilt. He’d never seen Jade strike anyone outside of Floyd until that point, let alone strike hard enough to knock a random boy out of his shoes. While everyone had their own misgivings about the eel, to Rem he was a shining beacon of hope.
“You tease my Rem again and I’ll have your head!”
Rem couldn’t remember the last time someone stood up for him so valiantly, let alone cried when he didn’t see the good in himself.
“I won’t listen to you doubt yourself anymore, ok? Those people are disgusting for not seeing the light you shine and for making you feel awful! They make you lose sight of yourself!
But it’s ok if you get lost. I’ll just come find you! Over and over and over again!”
From then on, he swore he’d never make Jade cry for as long as they both lived, not unless it was tears of happiness. He owed that to Jade for everything he’d done for him over the years.
He hates that he can’t keep that promise now.
The next time he sees Jade cry, Rem is bleeding out in his lover’s arms.
Rem’s uncle was a selfish asshole, stubborn piss ant, and everything in between. He was the one responsible for his family’s deaths, leading to Rem’s god awful childhood in the orphanage. He thought his nephew died that night, only to find out he was alive.
Now he’d come to finish the job.
Try as they may, Jade, Floyd, and Rem were no match for that bastard’s ferocious power, and in trying to protect the twins from his uncle’s final blast, the cost was his own life. When everyone realized what happened, the damage was done.
As Floyd takes off after the assailant hoping to break a few bones as revenge, Jade held his fading love in his arms. Tears pour from wide eyes, still unable to comprehend how quickly things transpired and led to an outcome so awful.
“Rem,” Jade pleaded through trembling lips, wiping the blood from his beloved’s sun-kissed cheeks. “Stay with me, love.”
Rem wanted to stay. He wanted to stay so badly, even as he felt it slipping through his fingers. There was still so much of this life he hadn’t seen, hadn't done yet.
Rem’s words are laced with a bitter, copper taste as he tries to speak. “Sorry, babe…Got blood…on your nice shirt…”
“No apologies needed because you’re going to be fine. I can always wash this later while we have a laugh about it.”
Rem always thought Jade had the prettiest smile, even during moments like this where he could tell it was forced.
“Jade, listen. This might be it—”
“It’s not,” the eel immediately barked back, holding Rem close to his chest. He tucked a few of those pearlescent strands of hair behind his ear to kiss his forehead. “We promised to greet the gates of Hell together, did we not? How dare you try to go without me?”
Rem couldn’t help but laugh as he remembered that promise. One of many that they’d made over the years that he knew he couldn’t fulfill now.
“Sorry…wanted to see…the world with you...”
“You will, love.” The words come out as a shaky, bittersweet reassurance for both of them. Jade knew he shouldn’t utter them aloud given the situation, but what else did they have if not the foolish hope that Rem could survive such a large blow to the chest? “Just stay awake for me.”
That request was getting harder to comply with. Rem could feel his vision fading fast, the world becoming colder around him. Even the warmth of Jade’s embrace was beginning to fade.
All he wanted was a little more time.
“Love you…so much,” Rem strained himself to say the words, knowing they might be his last.
“I love you, too, Rem. Stay awake for me, ok?” The carefully composed image that Jade always strived to maintain was coming apart, seeing the light start to fade from the eyes of his “forever”. “Stay awake for me, love. Just a little longer…”
Rem’s eyes are so heavy, no matter how much he wants to jump up and shake off the pain. He wishes it could just be a flesh wound that could be cleared up at a hospital somewhere, then he could go on living with the people he loved most like none of this ever happened, like his uncle never happened. He could take solace in knowing that his uncle wouldn’t get to savor this “victory” long, not if the Leech brothers had anything to say about it.
He just wishes the cost didn’t have to be their future.
Just as Rem struggled to utter another word, Floyd came charging in as fast as he could. His hands were bloodied and bruised as he raced to his friend’s side, a sign that Rem’s uncle got quite the pummeling from the eel, at least.
He wished he had the strength to reach up and wipe Floyd’s tears.
“You gotta stay, Rem! You can’t leave us like this, man,” Floyd choked out, taking Rem’s hand and gripping it with all his strength. “You gotta stay…please…”
“Y’all keep each other safe…love you…”
Jade screams his name, a bloodcurdling sound unlike anything Rem had ever heard before. It’s the last thing he hears before he takes one final breath, and exits this world with a smile.
