Even though the rest of Savanclaw was winding down for the evening, a certain dorm leader and his trusty hyena were awake and munching away at a bag of gummy bears. Deep conversations about the past, present, and future that carried on long into the night were not unheard of for them, another such occurrence taking place on the balcony of Jakari Kingscholar’s dorm room. His best friend and vice dorm leader, Azazel Bucchi—also known as “Zaz” to both friend and foe alike—sat beside him, stifling his laughter as Jakari carried on about his magical prowess and how it compared to the other dorm leaders.

Azazel thought it was nothing if not impressive, just how similar Jakari was to his three fathers—tall with sun-kissed skin, scale-like markings on his forehead akin to his fae father’s that hid behind flowing brown locks that mimicked his beastman father—yet so different from them in several ways. He had confidence that bordered on arrogance, but somehow knew when to remain humble and sweet to others looking to see his walls come down. The hyena figured that princes were just “built like this” as his father often told him. Azazel wouldn’t know, nor did he care to find out. As far as he was concerned, he was fine with just being the mischievious wingman and not the one in the spotlight.

He’s much shorter than his best friend, and while he would be more than happy to use his height to his advantage to continue his role as puppetmaster in the shadows, his bright golden eyes and even brighter snow white hair and tail make him stick out like a sore thumb. Couple that with his criminal amount of freckles and he might as well be a walking billboard for the Savanaclaw dorm, not he was particularly enamoured with the idea. As much as he adored his parents aesthetics, the little hyena couldn't help but wonder…

Before he could spiral into thoughts about drawing too much attention to himself, Jakari's voice brings him back from drowning too deep.

"Helloooooo, Twisted Wonderland to Zaz," he teased, waving his hands in the hyena's face with exaggerated motions. "Ya still with me, man?"

Azazel wasted no time firing back with a quip of his own, trying not to grumble at his thought process being interrupted. "Nah, I'm still on the moon somewhere. What'd ya say?"

Jakari smacked his lips, knowing that Azazel was screwing with him. Not like he was going to miss a chance to reiterate the truth. “I was sayinnnnn' that best part about me is that I’m built different than most," he repeated with a triumphant grin. "From the looks of the other dorm leaders, I'm thinking that should be easy to set myself apart."

“Do you mean ‘built different’ as in you’re literally born from a beastman, a human, and a dragon fae, or ‘built different’ like a waffle cone versus a regular cone?”

Jakari eyes rolled so far into the back of his head, he could probably see his home in the Savannah from here. “…Damn, Zaz, cut a guy a break, wouldya?,” he beamed, softly jabbing his friend with his elbow.

Azazel shot the beastman that familiar, cheeky grin that made it hard to be mad at him. Jakari was definitely a character—an enigma wrapped in a peanut butter sandwich then stuffed in a taco—but at the top of the list, he was the hyena's cherished friend, the one person who could make him feel like everyone's eyes wasn't on him for once. That in itself was enough for now.

Without missing a beat, Azazel fired back with, “C'mon now, what kind of best friend would I be if I did?”
